Welcome to the German History Society
Our mission is to promote the study and understanding of the history of Germany and the German-speaking world in its broadest global context.
As a registered charity, we foster close collaboration with established academic historians of Germany in the UK, Ireland and across the world, support postgraduates and early career researchers, and welcome the engagement of non-academics and teachers.

In Support of Ukraine
From the President of the German History Society:
“As Chair of the German History Society and on behalf of all our members, I express our strong support for the people of Ukraine, particularly our Ukrainian colleagues in History and all Ukrainian-born colleagues and students in the UK and Germany. Their European sovereign state, their freedom and their democratic values are in danger from a full-scale military invasion by Russia’s dictatorial government, in breach of international law. We support their resistance to an unprovoked attack by encouraging those who can to send aid to organisations like the Global Support Fund for Ukraine or the Red Cross Appeal for Ukraine”
Professor Karin Friedrich, FRHistS
Chair of the German History Society
The German History Society
Welcome to the UK and Republic of Ireland’s Society for the study of German History.
The German History Society advances the study and understanding of the history of Germany and the German-speaking world in its broadest global context. As a registered charity, it is run by academics from institutions of higher education in the UK and Ireland on a volunteer basis. Its members foster close collaboration with established academic historians of Germany across the world, support post-graduates and early career researchers, and welcome the engagement of non-academics and teachers.
Glimpses of German History
Created by the German History Society, the series ‘Glimpses of German History’ is designed for students, educators, and interested parties to learn more about Germany’s vibrant and interesting history through discussing everyday objects from its past. With expert commentary from leading academics in the field, this series speaks to a range of historical periods to help better understand German History as a whole.
Alongside the documentary series, in 2024 we’re running a ‘Creative Research Contest’ for students across the UK.
